Panda Knowledge: The distribution and current situation of giant pandas

Giant pandas are widely distributed in the Yangtze River, Yellow River, and Pearl River basins in China, including Zhoukoudian near Beijing, Guangdong, Guangxi, and nearby Southeast Asia. But now we can only find them in mountainous areas such as Qinling Mountains, Minshan Mountains, Qionglai Mountains, Liangshan Mountains, and Daxianling Mountains.
According to the results of the fourth national wild giant panda population survey, there are only 1,864 wild giant pandas, about 75% of which are distributed in Sichuan Province. The habitat spans 49 counties in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, with a habitat area of 2.58 million hectares. As of 2014, my country has established 67 giant panda nature reserves, an increase of 27 compared with the third adjustment period. However, 46.2% of the habitat and 33.2% of the population remain outside the nature reserve system. Habitat fragmentation and the survival risk of small populations mean that protecting giant pandas requires a long and arduous road. Giant pandas are a highly endangered species. If they are not protected in time, there will be no wild giant pandas in the world in the near future.
As of 2020, there are 633 captive giant pandas in captive breeding units around the world, including 215 captive giant pandas at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. Currently, there are only four units that can regularly maintain breeding populations of more than 10 animals: Wolong China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas, Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, and Shaanxi Province Rare Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Research Center. , and Beijing Zoo. In addition, giant pandas also live in more than 40 captive conservation institutions, including the Wakayama Shirahama Wildlife Park in Japan and the Atlanta Zoo in the United States.

In recent years, the situation of giant pandas has improved, but we still cannot relax. Protecting giant pandas is a long-term task. Protecting species diversity is the obligation of all mankind, for the future of mankind and the future of the earth.
