Captive Panda Number Reaches 728 as of the End of 2023

National Forestry and Grassland Administration: Captive panda number reaches 728

The National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China held a routine conference in the first quarter of 2024 on January 25, 2024. At the meeting, Zhang Yue, a second-level inspector of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China, introduced the situation about the Chinese panda protection and international cooperation. He said that in recent years, the structure of Chinese captive panda  and the genetic diversity has continued to rise. According to the optimized breeding plan, in 2023, 46 pandas were survived throughout the year, and the number of giant panda Captive reached 728.
Zhang Yue said that China began to breed the giant panda in the 1960's. At the beginning of this century, the three major problems such as the difficulty of estrus, breeding and pregnancy, and the difficulty of survival of giant pandas have gradually expanded. China has continuously improved the artificial breeding system with the Chinese Panda Protection Research Center and the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, strengthens the research and management of giant panda genetics, and implements scientifically optimized pairing reproduction, improves the organic combination of genetic quality and effectively maintains the continuous expansion of the captive population and the increasingly optimized genetic structure.
According to Zhang Yue, in accordance with the optimization and breeding plan, 46 panda bears were survived throughout the year, and 728 captive giant pandas in the world. After scientific assessment, the current captive giant panda  population can maintain 90% of his genetic diversity for 200 years, becoming a group of health, vibrant and sustainable development.
As of the end of 2023, there were 56 giant pandas living abroad. Since the research of giant panda cooperation in the 1990's, China has successfully breed the survival of the Grand Panda 41 pregnancies and 68 babies. On July 7, 2023, the giant panda "HuaNi" in South Korea successfully breed a panda twins. On August 24, the giant panda "DingDing" in Russia successfully breed a giant panda child.
