According to the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, the panda Qingci, female, was born on June 21, 2022 at the Wolong Walnut Ping Base of the Panda Center. Due to rare intestinal obstruction and intussusception, the healthy condition was extremely critical and rescue efforts were unsuccessful. She left us on March 23.
Since the onset of Panda Qingci on March 2nd, we have consulted with hospitals in West China Hospital multiple times and successfully completed the surgery for intestinal obstruction on March 5th. During the recovery process, Panda Qingci suddenly experienced intussusception and secondary obstruction. On March 17th, emergency surgery was performed, and the necrotic intestinal segment was successfully removed. Subsequently, although the expert team took meticulous care of Qingci panda 24 hours a day, they were still unable to save her life, which made us very sad!
The intussusception of pandas is a more dangerous acute abdominal condition than intestinal obstruction. It is caused by partial insertion of the intestine and its mesentery into the connected intestinal cavity, leading to obstruction of intestinal contents and easily causing intestinal perforation, necrosis, peritonitis, and even shock. The rescue time is very short. Qingci's condition is the first case of panda intestinal obstruction complicated by intussusception discovered and experienced by the Panda Center in recent years.
The illness is merciless, and the deceased is already gone. May Panda Qingci rest in peace! In the future, we will continue to explore methods for preventing and treating acute abdomen in giant pandas, continuously improve the medical level of pandas, and make every effort to ensure their life safety!
