Two Giant Pandas Are Introduced to the Public in the Madrid Zoo Today

On May 30th, Spanish time, the opening ceremony of the New Panda Home at the Madrid Zoo was held. Queen Mother Sofia of Spain unveiled a giant panda themed sculpture. Male panda "Jin Xi" and female panda "Zhu Yu" were officially introduced to the public after a health quarantine period. Mayor Almeida of Madrid, CEO of Madrid Zoo, Chinese Ambassador to Spain Yao Jing, as well as representatives from Chengdu Municipal Government and Chengdu Panda Base attended the ceremony.

Panda Jin Xi
Jin Xi, male, was born on September 1, 2020 with his twin sister "Jin Shuang" at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. It has a mischievous and active personality, with a black mole on its right face. At a younger age, it often angered his mother Miao Miao and provoked the panda He Hua, and was then beaten by his mother and the panda He Hua. The panda Jin Xi weighs around 110 kilos at present.

Panda Zhu Yu
Zhu Yu, female, was born on October 25, 2020 with her twin brother Qing Chongyang at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. Zhuyu always looks aggrieved and lovable. It weighs 98 kilos now.

The couple of pandas are set to remain in Spain for the next 10 years.

Many panda lovers are paying attention to the accommodation and diet of the new pandas in Madrid Zoo, hoping that Spain can keep its promise and take good care of the lovely pandas. The zoo renewed its institutional commitment with China in the ceremony.

Moreover, the square of giant pandas are named ' Plaza Reina Sofía' to thank her support for decades to conservation projects of endangered specie and for her connection to the giant pandas since 1979.

China's Ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing, highlighs that "the friendly bond" created by the giant pandas will unite the peoples of China and Spain, as "an important symbol of China-Spain friendship."

Since the arrival of the giant pandas "Jin Xi" and "Zhu Yu" from the Chengdu Panda Base at the Zoo Aquarium de Madrid on April 29, 2024, Chinese and Spanish breeders and veterinarians have worked together to carry out stress adaptation training and behavioral training to help them adapt to the new environment. The park selects bamboo source areas from Spain, France, and Portugal to ensure the supply of bamboo as the main food for giant pandas.

In September 2007, the giant pandas "Bing Xing" and "Hua Zuiba" came to Madrid, and China and the West began a 17 year research cooperation on giant pandas. On March 1, 2024, "Jin Xing", "Hua Zuiba" and their three panda cubs returned to Chengdu. The arrival of giant pandas "Jin Xi" and "Zhu Yu" continued the cultural exchange between China and Spain once agian, following the renew agreement on the pandas between Madrid Zoo and Chengdu Research and Breeding Base of Giant Pandas.
